Tomato plants are done for the year

If you are hanging on to your Tomato plants in hopes they will continue to produce forget it. Temperatures ranging above 90 degrees will stress your plant enough to slow down production and if you do get tomatoes they will be small and basically worthless. So now is the time to tear them out! Prepare your soil to plant something like beans or any other winter crop. August will be the last month of our summer sun angle and the sun rays change allowing slower mature rates on your plants. Melons will do the same everything must go for now and prepare for the fall season.

ANTS ARE GOOD FOR GARDENS

Did you know that ants are good for gardens? They kill soft tissue insects such as tomato worms. The keep fleas down and eat things like grass hoppers. Also, they control Aphids, scorpions and harmful slugs. I have ants in my garden today and we live peacefully together. Every once in a while they seem to get in the wrong place so I just pour soap and water on their mound and way they go to a new spot. So when you see an Ant stop and say hello he is working hard keeping your garden clean of harmful pest.

BLACK SPOT ON ROSES REMOVED THE NATURAL WAY

A baking soda recipe given by Dr. Thomas A. Zitter, a professor in the Cornell University Department of Plant Pathology. He has added the horticultural oil to his recipe but adds that this recipe with the oil should be used only occasionally for some plants may be injured by repeated applications of oil. I have used it in the spring before the heat set in. The horticultural oil will further block any overwintering blackspot on the roses and will help the solution stay on the leaves.
Here’s the recipe:1 tablespoon baking soda or potassium bicarbonate

1 tablespoon horticultural oil

1 gallon water1 gallon backpack or pump sprayer

Mix all ingredients in the sprayer and spray the underside and top of all leaves.
